Event Type

The NRA Shotgun Instructor Training class is designed to develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course. NRA Shotgun Instructor Training begins with the NRA Basic Instructor Training class, which must be completed first. Both classes together form the required course for NRA Shotgun Instructor certification. (You are not considered an NRA Certified Instructor until the NRA Training Department processes your application and issues your instructor credentials.)

We will be conducting the NRA Basic Shotgun Student Course before beginning the NRA Shotgun Instructor Training.

NRA Shotgun Instructor Training begins where NRA Basic Instructor Training stops: with Lesson VI. This package includes a Basic Instructor Training segment on Friday evening.  If you need the BIT, please indicate as such as you select the items below.

This NRA Shotgun Instructor Training class proceeds through eight lessons that teach you how to conduct the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course step by step using the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans, and how to teach shotgun shooting on a basic level. NRA Shotgun Instructor Training concludes with the Shotgun Instructor Examination and other preliminaries to certification by the NRA.

Here are the eight lessons in an NRA Shotgun Instructor Training class:

  1. Introduction to “NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans”
  2. Teaching “Shotgun Lesson I: Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Handling”
  3. Teaching “Shotgun Lesson II: Ammunition Knowledge and the Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting”
  4. Basic Shotgun Shooting Instructional Method
  5. Teaching “Shotgun Lesson III: Firing the First Shots”
  6. Teaching “Shotgun Lesson IV: Shotgun Shooting Skills Practical Exercise”
  7. Evaluating and Improving Performance of Beginning Shotgun Shooters
  8. Teaching “Shotgun Lesson V: Shotgun Sports and Activities”

The practical assessment will require at least 30 rounds of ammunition and you will be allowed to attempt the qualification two times after some warm up shots.  To be safe, it would be wise to bring at least 100 rounds of ammo.  Any style of shotgun is acceptable.

After registering here, please go to the NRA page and register for both the student course and instructor course so they will have the correct information for your credentials: Instructor Course Link     Student Course Link

New instructors or instructors who have not had their Basic Instructor Training within the two years prior to class will need to attend the BIT on Friday evening.  For those coming from out of town, you are welcome to reserve a room in the bunkhouse free of charge.
