SUMMARY:Farnam-Defensive Urban Rifle
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to prepare the defensive rifleman for t
 he safe handling and use of this specialized weapon and taught by John Far
 nam.\nIt has been said that by reducing necessities\, we can afford luxuri
 es\; such is not the case in shooting. For only by learning the necessitie
 s–the fundamentals–can you afford the luxury of excellence. Almost any
 one can “fire” a rifle and almost everyone who is capable of pointing 
 their finger at an object can learn to shoot. However it takes determinati
 on\, reliable equipment and most importantly instruction from a qualified 
 teacher to become a competent rifle shooter.\n\nThe emphasis of this cours
 e is on defensive rifle handling and shooting skills. Most of this class i
 s on short to medium ranges\, rapid target-acquisition\, improvised shooti
 ng positions\, “snapshooting” and more deliberate fire. Defensive situ
 ations are always emergencies\, so we must also put considerable emphasis 
 on speed. The rifle must be mounted quickly\, fired quickly (but accuratel
 y!) and the shooter must always automatically prepare to fire again quickl
 y. We will not ignore shooting in excess of one hundred meters completely\
 , but we will concentrate on the shorter ranges. There will be single and 
 multiple targets and students will have an opportunity to practice rationa
 l decision making.\n\nMilitary autoloaders are strongly recommended as mos
 t of the class is spent firing at multiple targets. Lever actions are marg
 inally adequate as students with lever actions are often frustrated by the
  frequency they must reload. However we will not accept bolt guns\, rimfir
 e rifles\, or slug-shooting shotguns. Slings are mandatory\, as we will be
  running a hot range. High-magnification\, high profile\, close eye-relief
  scopes are not recommended. We do recommend military peep\, iron sights o
 r low-power\, forward mounted scopes. The best rifle is a military autoloa
 der\, but as we indicated\, some hunting rifles will do. Also plan to brin
 g knee pads and binoculars. Students are advised that their rifles will se
 e some strenuous\, rugged use and may get scratched up a bit. Pretty guns 
 are best left at home. You will need 400 rounds of rifle ammunition.\n\nFo
 r those traveling to this event\, we have bunkhouse accommodations availab
 le free of charge.  Just reserve your bunk at checkout and bring your own
  towel and toiletries.  You will have a refrigerator and microwave availa
 ble and it is right on the range.
